Telecom Revenue Grew in 2026, but don't Celebrate Yet

Dell’Oro Group research reported worldwide telecom capex increased about 5% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, but the good news wasn’t enough for the analyst firm to change its downbeat projections for future telecom growth. Reporting that equipment trends remain closely correlated with capex, Dell’Oro also noted a 5% increase in telecom kit revenue spanning broadband access; microwave and optical transport; mobile core network (MCN); radio access network (RAN); and high-end router and aggregation. Nvidia Says Telcos Favor Open Models for Their Own AI

Nvidia sees telecom operators basing their AI strategies on open models, as they’re more customizable and trustworthy. Nvidia defines open models as “AI models released with publicly accessible weights, data, or training recipes that developers can inspect, customize, and deploy on their own infrastructure.” This is opposed to the closed models used by the two biggest US AI companies: Anthropic and the paradoxically named OpenAI. Hitachi Vantara Compares AI Infrastructure Cycle to Fiber Boom

Simon Ninan, SVP of business strategy at Hitachi Vantara, compared the current AI capex cycle to the telecom industry’s heavy fiber investment decades ago. He said operators laid vast amounts of fiber with a sort of “build it and they will come” mentality back then. Years later, that capacity proved critical with the advent of the digital data era.
