Technical Advisor (TA) CEO Spotlight: Kat Lopez Shelby, Shelby Technology Solutions

(This is part of a regular series of technical advisor CEO Spotlights, where leading TAs share their secrets for success and goals for the future).

Kat Lopez Shelby started Shelby Technology Solutions in Midland, Texas, in Jan. 2020, or as she says “months before the world changed” because of the pandemic. She went on to build a successful boutique advisory business by becoming a trusted advocate to clients and working with a broad ecosystem of tech partners.

“I saw too many business owners feeling overwhelmed by technology and left without a trusted advocate to help them make informed decisions,” Lopez Shelby said.

She became a strong enough advocate that she was named one of the inaugural Channel Partners Tech Advisor (TA) Thought Leaders this year. She also extends her influence through her Tech + Tequila podcast, where she brings real conversations about technology, leadership, and the advisor experience to a broader audience. Her approachable style and willingness to engage openly help make the industry more accessible and inclusive.

We caught up with Lopez Shelby to learn more about her background, advice for TAs and strategies for growth.

What inspired you to start or lead your company, and what is your company’s mission?

Lopez Shelby: Technology has become the backbone of every business, yet many organizations are forced to navigate cybersecurity threats, digital transformation, communications, and IT strategy on their own. As a Latina entrepreneur and technology advisor, I've spent my career helping businesses solve problems through technology. Along the way, I saw firsthand that the right technology doesn't just improve operations; it creates opportunities. It helps businesses grow, serve their customers better, protect what they've built, and create jobs in their communities.

That belief became the foundation of Shelby Technology Solutions. Our mission is to empower businesses through secure, strategic, and innovative technology solutions that drive growth and resilience. We simplify complex technology decisions, strengthen cybersecurity, improve customer and employee experiences, and help organizations leverage technology as a competitive advantage.

At our core, we're more than a technology advising agency; we're advocating for the businesses we serve. We believe that when business owners have the right technology and trusted guidance, they can focus on their vision, build stronger companies, and create lasting impact in their communities.

One of our greatest strengths is our extensive ecosystem of technology partners. Rather than being tied to a single provider, we work with a broad network of leading technology suppliers across cybersecurity, cloud, connectivity, communications, and business technology solutions. This allows us to remain vendor-neutral and recommend the solutions that best align with each client's goals, budget, and long-term strategy.

Our approach is simple: we focus on finding the right solution, not selling a specific product.

What do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges in the industry over the next five years?

Lopez Shelby: Over the next five years, I believe the biggest opportunity in our industry will be helping small and midsize businesses leverage technology to compete at a level that was once only accessible to large enterprises. Advances in artificial intelligence, automation, cloud solutions, cybersecurity, and global connectivity are creating new opportunities for businesses to scale more efficiently, improve customer experiences, and expand their reach beyond local markets.

Many SMB and mid-market organizations are no longer limited by geography. Whether their employees work remotely, they serve customers across multiple regions, or they're expanding internationally, technology has become the foundation that enables growth on a global scale. Helping businesses build secure, scalable technology environments that support that growth is one of the most exciting opportunities we see.

At the same time, the challenges are significant. Cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, technology ecosystems are becoming more complex, and many growing businesses lack the internal resources needed to evaluate and manage technology effectively. Business leaders are being asked to make increasingly strategic technology decisions while balancing budgets, security requirements, and growth objectives.

This is where trusted technology advisors play a critical role. Our mission is to help clients leverage technology confidently, securely, and strategically, whether they're serving customers across town or across the globe.

How does Shelby Technology Solutions use AI and other emerging technologies to stay ahead of the curve?

Lopez Shelby: We believe in practicing what we preach. We don't view AI as a replacement for people. We see it as a tool that helps people work smarter, make better decisions, and focus on the activities that create the greatest value.

We are actively incorporating AI and other emerging technologies into our own operations to improve efficiency, enhance customer experiences, streamline workflows, and automate repetitive tasks. By leveraging these tools internally, we gain firsthand insight into both the opportunities and challenges they present, allowing us to provide practical, real-world guidance to our clients.

At the same time, we recognize that technology alone is never the answer. The human element remains critical. Successful technology adoption requires strategy, training, change management, and a clear understanding of business objectives. That's why we focus on helping our clients implement technology in ways that empower their teams rather than replace them.

By combining emerging technologies with a people-first approach, we help our clients stay ahead of the curve while ensuring that innovation remains aligned with their values, goals, and customer needs.

What advice would you give to aspiring tech entrepreneurs or leaders?

Lopez Shelby: Build your business and your community at the same time. Too often, people focus solely on growing revenue, products, or services and forget that lasting success is built on relationships. Throughout my career, I've learned that your community, clients, partners, mentors, employees, and fellow entrepreneurs, are one of your greatest assets. When you invest in people, opportunities naturally follow.

I would also encourage entrepreneurs to stay curious and never stop learning. Technology changes rapidly, and the leaders who thrive are the ones who embrace innovation while staying grounded in the needs of the people they serve. The most successful businesses aren't built around technology alone; they're built around solving real problems and creating meaningful impact.

Most importantly, remember that success is not just measured by revenue or growth. It's measured by the lives you impact, the relationships you build, and the community you help create along the way. If you focus on serving others and creating value, you'll build a business that not only succeeds but leaves a lasting legacy.

What’s next for you? Are there any exciting projects or initiatives you’d like to share with our audience?

Lopez Shelby: One of the initiatives I'm most excited about is the expansion of Tech + Tequila Live. What started as a podcast has evolved into a platform for education, community building, and industry collaboration. Through live events, expert conversations, and educational content, we're creating opportunities for business leaders, technology professionals, and entrepreneurs to learn from one another, share insights, and stay informed about emerging trends shaping the future of business and technology.

Looking ahead, we're committed to expanding both our advisory services and our educational initiatives. We believe businesses need more than technology solutions; they need trusted guidance, practical education, and a strong community of peers and experts they can learn from. Through Shelby Technology Solutions and Tech + Tequila Live, we're building a space where technology, business, and community come together to help organizations thrive.

What do most people misunderstand about building a sustainable business in the advisor channel?

Lopez Shelby: One of the biggest misconceptions about building a sustainable business in the advisor channel is that success happens overnight or follows a straight path. I launched Shelby Technology Solutions in January 2020, just months before the world changed. If there's one thing that experience taught me, it's that building a sustainable business requires grit, resilience, and the ability to adapt when circumstances change. Markets evolve, technology changes, client needs shift, and sometimes the strategy that worked yesterday isn't the strategy that will carry you forward tomorrow.

People underestimate how messy growth can be. As entrepreneurs, we're often told to wait until everything is perfect before launching a new service, entering a new market, or pursuing a new opportunity. In my experience, growth happens in the middle of the mess. You learn by doing, by listening to your clients, by adjusting, and by staying committed even when the path isn't perfectly clear.

Where do TAs risk losing credibility with buyers today?

Lopez Shelby: I believe technology advisors risk losing credibility when they stop putting the client first. In today's market, it's easy to get caught up in the latest technology trends, buzzwords, or supplier incentives. While innovation is important, not every new technology is the right fit for every business. Clients are looking for trusted guidance, not the latest sales pitch.

For me, credibility is built through transparency, honesty, and a willingness to tell a client what they need to hear, even when it's not the easiest recommendation. Sometimes the right answer is a new technology investment. Sometimes it's optimizing what they already have. Sometimes it's slowing down and creating a better strategy before making a purchase.

When advisors consistently put their clients' goals ahead of transactions, they build something far more valuable than a sale; they build trust. And in the advisor channel, trust is everything.

If you were starting today, what would you do differently and what would you do exactly the same?

Lopez Shelby: If I were starting today, I would invest in systems, processes, and strategic partnerships earlier than I did the first time around. As entrepreneurs, we often wear every hat in the business, and while that hustle is important, I've learned that sustainable growth comes from building a strong foundation that can scale alongside the business.

I would also diversify my partnerships and community connections sooner. The more perspectives, expertise, and relationships you have access to, the better equipped you are to solve problems and create value for your clients.

What I would do exactly the same is focus on relationships and community. Shelby Technology Solutions was built on trust, referrals, partnerships, and a genuine commitment to helping clients succeed. Those relationships have opened doors, created opportunities, and helped us navigate challenges that no business owner can overcome alone.

I would also continue to lead with a client-first mindset. Technology changes constantly, but the importance of listening, understanding business goals, and serving as a trusted advisor never changes.
